Pair of painted and parcel gilt open armchairs
A fine pair of painted and parcel gilt armchairs with upholstered seats and backs having show wood rails to both. The chair is elegant for the shape of the back and the arm supports as well as the front square tapered legs.
The new neo-classicism popularized by the work of Henry Holland for the Prince of Wales at Carlton House was a far simpler, less elaborate classicism which relied on subtle moulding shapes and straight lines with very little embellishment of rosettes, lunettes or carving.
