Pair of demi-lune console tables in the manner of John Linnell
A superb pair of marquetry inlaid demi-lune consoles attributed to the workshop of John Linnell. The tops are veneered in harewood with a trellis pattern having boxwood flowers. The frieze is inlaid with stylized stop fluting and rosettes, the edge with moulded lacquer brass banding. The four tapered legs are inlaid with classical pattern and are connected by stretchers having inlaid leaves, the underside fretted to create the tips of the leaves. The stretchers support a mahogany banded oval platform. This table is similar to a table illustrated in Helana Hayward and Pat Kirkham's book, “William and John Linnell”, (Fig. 309) from Heveningham Hall, Suffolk.
John Linnell (1729-96) was a principle competitor to Thomas Chippendale (1718-1779). Next to Chippendale, Linnell was used by Robert Adam for many of his better commissions including Osterley and Kedleston Parks. At some point in the mid-1760's, Linnell forged a relationship with the Swedish cabinetmakers, Christopher Furlohg and Georg Haupt and Linnell's workshops started to produce high quality marquetry furniture such as that found on these tables.
