Pair of George II Walnut Stools

A Magnificent and Exceptionally Rare Pair of George II Walnut Stools. Early oval Georgian stools are rare, and pairs are exceptionally rare. This pair of stools from c.1730 are in remarkably original condition retaining their original drop in seats marked to indicate that they are the 3rd and 4th of a set. The seats are now upholstered in green silk and the stools are raised on shells and lappet carved cabriole legs ending in well defined pad feet. The color and patination of the walnut is particularly good and there is an extraordinary elegance to the form of the cabriole legs. We know of four stools form this set. In addition to this pair a single stool was sold to a private collector in the 1990’s by Stair and Company; the fourth was sold by us and is now in a private California collection.

Provenance: Estate of Mrs Clyde G. Whelden, Northern California.
