CARVED LION AFTER TRIBUTE TO SWISS GUARDS
A finely carved wooden model of a resting lion, having an inscription on the side that commemorates the Swiss Guard of Louis XVI who died protecting the monarch at the Tuileries in August of 1792. The original model was designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen and is in Lucerne. The lion lies atop symbols of the French monarchy. 19th century. Ht.5 3/4”, Width 4 1/2”, Depth 12 1/2”
The translation from the Latin is "To the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss."
