Charles II Silver Gilt Mirror
A fine Anglo-Dutch carved and silver gilded looking glass with putti flanking the crest (unknown) which is gilded. Anglo-Dutch circa 1680. The style of the mirror reflects the emergence from the mannerist tradition of carving into a continental baroque style that became popular across England in the early and middle years of the Restoration of the monarchy post 1660. Silver gilding was popular as it resembled solid silver, a fad in Louis XIV's court, and was less expensive. The highlighted gold of the crest (owner unknown) is a luxurious highlight to the frame.
