George I Carved and Gilt Mirror in the Manner of Belchier

Regular price $52,500.00 USD
Regular price Sale price $52,500.00 USD

A rare carved gesso and gilt looking glass with original beveled plate, the top with carved ostrich feathers over a projecting tasseled tambrequin between a broken scroll pediment, the mirror carved with strapwork with projecting scrolls with scrolled flourishes throughout. English in the manner of John Belchier, circa 1720. Ht. 55", W. 28.5", D. 5.5"

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has a Belchier looking glass with similar scrolls that border the looking glass. The Met mirror is similar to a known Belchier mirror at Erddig House in Wales. The style of the top part of this mirror reflects an understanding of continental baroque design with the attenuated scrolls and the palanquin crested with feathers--as a style it was popular for a short period before the development of the English baroque style initially developed by William Kent.
