Lignum Vitae Wassail Bowl
Lignum vitae wassail bowl, c. 1690. Wassail bowls were used as vessels in which revelers dropped cakes and bread into--the practice of floating chips of toasted bread is where the salutation for a "Toast" began. Lignum is a hard and dense wood with natural oils which are ideal for turning on a lather. This particular bowl has wonderful aging--it has suffered and survived and come out even more interesting than when it was first turned. Ht. 7", Dia. 8"
