A sizable painted neoclassical open armchair in the manner of Mayhew and Ince having a carved and molded oval upholstered back, carved armrests with pads, the show wood rails fluted with interspersed roundels on turned fluted and tapered legs. English circa 1770 Ht. 36.75", Seat ht. 17.25", W. 21.5', D. 20" Sold Sotheby's New York, October 18, 1997, lot 120, The present armchair is similar to the work of the London cabinet-making firm of Mayhew and Ince and relates specifically to a suite the firm provided to Richard Myddelton for the saloon at Chirk Castle (see Michael Hall, 'Chirk Castle, Denbighshire', Country Life, July 16, 1992, pp. 54-7, fig. 7).
