Pair of Rosewood Armchairs in English Style
Great craftsmen were working in the English style around the world in the 18th century and those craftsmen could be almost any nationality. These chairs have a style that might suggest a Chinese craftsmen, one who was used to working in rosewood. These chairs may be have been made for an Englishman living abroad whose decorative yen leaned towards a taste of home. The carving on the splats of this pair is particularly unusual.
