Queen Anne Japanned Mirror
An ogee molded japanned pier mirror having three separate beveled plates in the frame with beveled dividers hiding the joins of the three plates. Ht. 70" W. 26" Painting refreshed.
Large mirror plates were a rarity in the late 17th century. As most of the mirror plates were bevelled (by hand) to echo the shape of the frame, there were likely many plates broken in manufacture. In the case of this pier mirror (a mirror designed to hang between two doors or windows) the maker used three plates of glass and then crafted bevelled cross bars so that the flow of the glass was not interrupted by any wood or decoration.
